Nicola Canford Elementary
Traditional Calming Space Stations ﷯ Reflection Rocks: Rocks to sit on near a quiet waterfall. Traditionally the purpose of this was to have students slowly expand their listening from the immediate noises to the noises that they can hear far away and then come back again. This was done in timing with breathing and heartbeats (10 deep breaths then locate a noise farther out, etc) ﷯Washing Location: A flat part of the stream where students could kneel, scoop up handfuls of water and wash. One side of the stream – for washing (kneeling on flat rocks). The other side for self-discipline, traditionally we knelt on pebbles. Traditionally there was power in water to wash away anxiety, worry, anger, mourning and sadness. Psychological the shock of the cold water and the visualizing of the removal of the strong emotion are powerful self-regulating tools. ﷯Worry Pebbles: Another flat part of the stream with small pebbles in the bottom where students could remove a number of pebbles and name the events/issues/worries that are causing them stress/worry/anxiety and visualize releasing those to the water to allow them to be washed away. Traditionally this was done with a close loved one or trusted elder. ﷯Thankfulness Walk: This is so that students can walk the perimeter of the stream and the calming space. While walking they are to identify the life that they are caring for and how that life will care for them (ie – the medicines that we care for will one day support us, the insects and animals that we care for will one day supply us, etc). Stop at each of the Cardinal points, indicated by the Grandfather Rocks from the 4 different Nłeʔkèpmx bands, and find something to be thankful for. Balance Log: Log set up for students to focus on balance and concentration. Traditionally, the balance activity activated the gross motor system, increased concentration and reduce hyperactivity.
